How often should you get your septic tank pumped?
For proper maintenance and long term functioning the Iowa DNR recommends that septic tanks be pumped out every three to five years. Pumping the tank helps prevent sludge and scum from flowing out of the tank and into the secondary treatment system. The Iowa DNR also does not recommend the use of additives as a substitute for tank pumping as it may actually harm your system if it causes solids to become suspended and flow into your leach field.
